Chapter 14
PACRIA HAD PROMISED CAPTAIN JAmwAY SHE WOULD GO over the data they'd accumulated at the scene of the Kazon ship's destruction. And, to the best of her ability, she meant to keep that promise.
First, she looked at the ion pattern the destroyer had left behind. Though propulsion systems were hardly her specialty, the Emmonac knew enough about them to identify the technology that had created the trail.
It was Zendak'aan, of course. But that didn't tell her much of anything. Half a dozen races in this sector used Zendak'aan technology or some close variation on it.
Next, Pacria looked at the molecular decay patterns in the debris, to see what kinds of weapons had been
employed. There, too, though she was not a military tactician, she detected the legacy of the Zendak'aa. But again, there were at least six or seven races currently in possession of that weapons technologymaybe more.
After that, she checked for organic debris, though surely Captain Janeway had done that as well. Pacria found only trace amounts, certainly not enough to identify the victim or victims, much less the manner in which they had perished.
Knowing how fond the Truat Nor were of ejecting memorial dust after a battle, she checked for the stuff. There was none in evidence. That ruled out the Truat Nor.
Pacria then combed the sensor data for gaps in the debris spread or indications of graviton particles. Either one would have made her suspect the Taserrat, who liked to use their tractor beams to snare trophies from the remains of their enemies.
As it happened, she found neither gaps nor gravitons. That meant the Taserrat were probably not the culprits either.
Beyond that, Pacria knew, there was little she could do. She would have liked to contact Captain Janeway and tell her she had located her colleagues. Or at least offer her some assurance they had survived the Kazon ship's destruction.
She wished she could leave these people a gift for all their kindness to her. However, it didn't appear she would get the chance.
Kes stood outside the door to Captain Janeway's ready room and waited for the computer to alert the captain to her presence. After a moment or two, the door slid open.
The captain was seated on the other side of her desk. She looked tired. Still, she managed a smile.
"Kes. What can I do for you?"
The Ocampa took a seat across the desk from Janeway. "It's about Pacria," she began.
The captain's brows knit. "Don't tell me she's suffered a setback? I just saw her in her quarters."
"Actually," Kes said, "she's recovering nicely. At least, as far as her injuries are concerned. But. .
"Yes?" Janeway prompted.
"She has a disease," the Ocampa explained.
The captain's eyes narrowed. "It's not contagious, is it? A danger to the crew?"
"No, nothing like that."
"Then what?" Janeway asked.
Kes described the illness in some detail. Having been trained as a scientist herself, the captain listened patiently and with great interest. Also, with great sympathy.
"Then it's fatal," she concluded.
The Ocampa nodded. "But," she added quickly, we can help her.
